Stormzy is 100% correct, there is racism in the UK
I was a late-comer to Twitter, but now I go on most days. Sometimes I regret it. Today was one of those days. I was expecting my feed to be full of pictures and videos from Liverpool FC’s latest trophy win. Instead, quite a bit of it was taken up with ITV’s reporting of an interview with Stormzy. The headline reads, “Rapper Stormzy says UK is ‘100 per cent racist’”. Which is not what he said at all. Of course many people would not read the entire article or even go beyond the headline, because that takes time out of their day. Why bother reading when you can jump to conclusions and spread your undeveloped views really quickly before switching to SnapChat or WhatsApp.
In the article, Stormzy is asked if the UK is a racist country. He said, “Definitely, 100%… there is a lot of racism in the country.” A very different quote from the one used in the headline. His actual words say that there is definitely racism in the country, whereas the quote says the country is 100% racist.
This really sums up how his words were taken out of context and it takes something a little bit ludicrous to show just how badly they skewed his words. In the quote above, he clearly did not say the UK is cheese, he said there is cheese in it and both things are true. There is racism in the UK, as surely as there is cheese.
The reason for this misrepresentation? Only the ITV reporter and their bosses will know for sure, but it seems as if it was written that way to stir up dislike for Stormzy and dismiss his view. It seems 100% racist. I really hope that is untrue, but that’s how it looks to me.
By misrepresenting his words — ITV caused a number of racists, or people displaying racist views (if that’s different), to voice their opinions on how non-racist the country is. All of them dismissing Stormzy’s words as lies — probably ignoring the article itself — and insisting that there is zero racism in the UK.
This kind of blatant hypocrisy is all too common.
People telling a black person that their view is wrong with no evidence whatsoever and purely based on the words of a news broadcaster, and in this case purely on the headline, is racist. That’s a fact. Most people when asked would testify that news headlines and articles cannot be trusted 100%, yet, so many people believe what they read 100%.
And why shouldn’t they?
Shouldn’t news broadcasters, journalists, and all media have a duty to report in a way which is fair, equal, and unbiased? Isn’t that somewhere in the rules? It should be, for sure. It’s good practice to be sceptical about everything you read, but it’s so tiring. Why can we not just trust the big companies at least to tell us the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth? Because that headline is a lie. It’s altering the facts to shift blame onto someone for no apparent reason, other than to antagonise people. It’s very poor journalism at best, and completely, utterly, totally racist at worst.
This country favours white people. That is a fact.
Look at our former prime ministers. Look at the ministers around the country, look at the majority of people on TV — news reporters, TV shows, movies. White people dominate everything. Sport is probably the one area where they do not, but even then black sportspeople are abused and do not get the top jobs.
Stormzy was asked is there racism in the UK, 100% — there is.
Stormzy is an intelligent, well-spoken, opinionated man. He left school with 6 A* GCSEs. He is an avid reader who cites Malorie Blackman as his favourite author and has his own publishing company. He will also act in the TV show based on Malorie Blackman’s ‘Noughts and Crosses’. He is also outspoken about social issues such as sexism and racism. He is, rightfully, an idol for many.
There is a lot more to Stormzy than meets the eye, and there is a lot more to that ITV News article than the headline.
